چکیده

Music, sound and brain activity share similarities in how we can measure or create them, namely as combinations of time-dependent processes (repetition and history) and time-independent events (discontinuous, nonlinear or catastrophic processes). Furthermore, time is fundamental in how we measure both brain activity and sound objectively, and how we define relationships e.g. between notes as well as brain regions. In a sense, therefor, music and neuroscience present us with unique ways to explore time. In this article we combine these two different perspectives on time by using EEG to generate a musical composition. The purpose of this article is to propose a two step procedure that allows further systematic explorations. In an initial generative step, EEG is analyzed and converted to normalized values for composition, which we coined proto-duration and proto-pitch. In a second step, these values were transformed into a musical score before re-arrangement for performance by hand. The results are then discussed and future developments proposed.

Music Composition from the Brain Signal: Representing the Mental State by Music

This paper proposes a method to translate human EEG into music, so as to represent mental state by music. The arousal levels of the brain mental state and music emotion are implicitly used as the bridge between the mind world and the music. The arousal level of the brain is based on the EEG features extracted mainly by wavelet analysis, and the music arousal level is related to the musical para...

Neural Correlates of Boredom in Music Perception

Introduction: Music can elicit powerful emotional responses, the neural correlates of which have not been properly understood. An important aspect about the quality of any musical piece is its ability to elicit a sense of excitement in the listeners. In this study, we investigated the neural correlates of boredom evoked by music in human subjects. Methods: We used EEG recording in nine sub...

Brain, music, and non-Poisson renewal processes.

In this paper we show that both music composition and brain function, as revealed by the electroencephalogram (EEG) analysis, are renewal non-Poisson processes living in the nonergodic dominion. To reach this important conclusion we process the data with the minimum spanning tree method, so as to detect significant events, thereby building a sequence of times, which is the time series to analyz...

Combining EEG Frontal asymmetry studies with affective algorithmic composition and expressive performance models

This paper draws together two strands of research in different disciplines: EEG Frontal Asymmetry studies and Affective-based Algorithmic Composition and Performance. There have been numerous studies which support the hypothesis that Frontal EEG asymmetry is an indicator of arousal and valence of emotion. There have also been a number of studies examining which music features are related to whi...

Scale-Free Brain-Wave Music from Simultaneously EEG and fMRI Recordings

In the past years, a few methods have been developed to translate human EEG to music. In 2009, PloS One 4 e5915, we developed a method to generate scale-free brainwave music where the amplitude of EEG was translated to music pitch according to the power law followed by both of them, the period of an EEG waveform is translated directly to the duration of a note, and the logarithm of the average ...
